UPLIFT by Natalia Terfa: Book Spotlight + Author Interview + Giveaway

Uplift by Natalia Terfa

Book Description:

No matter how old we are, where we live, or what we believe – there are times in everyone’s life that cause us to struggle. And it’s in those times that we want nothing else but a word of hope and instead are so often surrounded by trite platitudes and false promises.

This is not that.

This small book was written to be something different: to uplift those who need it, to bring grace and love and light to the darkest times, and to be a voice of hope in the world where hope is often at a premium.

Read it yourself and be uplifted, or gift it to someone going through dark days.

We all need a little hope in difficult times. This is just a place to start.

Author Interview:

It is my pleasure to welcome Natalia Terfa for an interview. Natalia shares with us more about her book, how it came about, and some interesting facts about herself.

Welcome, Natalia ~

  1. How did this book come about?

As a pastor at Prince of Peace in Brooklyn Park, MN, I was a part of this amazing group of people who started a cancer support group. It was one of those times where it just felt like everyone we knew seemed to be hearing those three words: you have cancer.  It’s a club that no one wants to join, and never asks to be a part of, but each member is incredible and resilient and filled with fight. Once after a meeting, one of the group members asked if I’d write them an uplifting devotional to be sent weekly, in the hopes that it might lift their spirits on those dark days of treatment and waiting for test results. The Friday Uplift was born, and kind of snowballed into a big mailing list and then a book.

2. Who is this book for?

There was a funny moment in my initial stages of planning with my publisher, where they asked me this very question and I was like -”Um… everyone??”  But really, it’s true. There is no person who is exempt from difficulties in their life.  No person who cancer has not touched. No person who doesn’t have bad days. This book is for people needing a little something to bring them hope in tough times, light on dark days.  And that is really all of us.

3. There are so many devotionals – what makes yours different?

I have a confession.  I think devotionals are cheesy as all heck. AND if you had asked me what kind of book I could see myself writing, a devotional would not have made my list. Oh the irony. But despite my feelings about devotionals, I wanted to write one that was cheese free.  One that talked to people in a language they could understand.  And finally, one people could pick up when they needed it, hear someone acknowledge with them that life sometimes sucks, and then provide a little bit of extra hope in the midst of those things. If I can bring some comfort along with breaking people out of bad theology at the same time, I think that’s a win.

4. Do you have a profession besides writing?

Yes.  Though I really love to write, my profession is a pastor.  I work at Prince of Peace Church in Brooklyn Park, MN.  I preach every other week, and work primarily in the areas of pastoral care and small group ministry.  It’s a wonderful, difficult, and incredible job, and I wouldn’t want to do anything else!

5. What is your favorite thing about this book?

I love that the people who sign up to receive the weekly emails (www.upliftlife.org) and read the devotional have become a little community of people who are going out into the world and trying to be a positive force for good. That they buy the book not for themselves but to give to others who are in need. More than anything else, this community sees this as more than a book, but as a movement.  It’s just awesome.
