Author Stan HoldenExude Empathy by Stan Holden

When I was growing up, my mom used to say, “Walk a mile in my moccasins.” The line originated from an old poem written by Mary T. Lathrap in 1895. Aside from our Native American heritage, this particular poem spoke volumes to me, and I keep a copy of it hanging on my wall. It’s a great reminder that all of us have our own experiences, perspectives, and insecurities and that we should be sensitive to the same in others.

Do you want to know the best trick for getting over your fears and insecurities about talking to strangers? Here it is: Stop thinking about your fears and insecurities! Okay, I know that sounds easier said than done, but there’s actually a very simple way to get your attention off your own thoughts and feelings. You need to put your attention somewhere else, and the best place you could put it is on the thoughts and feelings of that scary stranger you’re about to say hello to.

When speaking with strangers (or anyone for that matter), practice empathy. Empathy is very different from sympathy. Sympathy is the ability to express condolences to another’s plight. Empathy, on the other hand, is the capacity to “feel with” another person, to share or recognize emotions experienced by others. In fact, it’s one of the defining characteristics of the human race—our ability to put ourselves in each other’s shoes and walk around in them.

Book Spotlight

Giving Candy to Strangers by Author Stan Holden

Too many sales people are focused on the end result, the outcome—the close—and another notch on their gun! But, what if you approached “sales” from a heart-centered standpoint, with curiosity and playfulness, as though the world were your sandbox?

What if you created relationships for no other reason than to help others and make new friends? I know what you are saying, “How can it not be about results when it comes to business?”

The bottom line is important, but if you detach from this burden while you are creating relationships, you will find that the health of your bottomline will improve on its own!
