In an uncertain time, Heather Flower faces a choice that will change her life forever.
It is 1653 and Heather Flower, a princess of the Montaukett tribe, is celebrating her wedding feast when a rival tribe attacks, killing the groom and kidnapping her. Though her ransom is paid by an Englishman, she is bound by her captors and left to die—until she finds herself rescued by handsome Dutch Lieutenant Dirk Van Buren.
Still tender from her loss, Heather Flower begins to heal in the home of the Hortons, English friends of her people. Torn between her affection for Dirk and her longtime friendship with Ben Horton, Heather Flower must make a difficult choice—stay true to her friend or follow her heart.

Rebecca DeMarino is a masterful writer and researcher. In her novel, To Capture Her Heart, the second book in The Southold Chronicles, DeMarino’s writing contains sufficient clarity so as not to leave the reader who hasn’t read the first book behind. This book has the strength to stand alone.
Historical fiction is a captivating genre for this reader. Not a student of history who enjoyed long, boring lectures, I enjoy learning history through the research, the facts shared, and the fictional story built around the well-researched facts. Here again DeMarino takes the threads of centuries past, stories from the time and place, facts, emotions, and her own life experiences and weaves a magnificently told story.
The story of Heather Flower and her family and friends in Southold is set in the mid-1650s, a time when the Dutch and the English were still bickering, quarreling, and often fighting over religious beliefs, land ownership, and rights of citizens.
Heather Flower’s tentative emotions during the story are impacted by several factors (I won’t spoil it for you!). Among them, the attraction an Englishman and a Dutchman have for her affections. It is Heather Flower’s decision to make, and it is a difficult one. What will she do? How will she make up her mind?
I highly recommend this novel to anyone who loves fiction based in history, Christian principles, and the early settling of the eastern part of our country. Rebecca DeMarino does not disappoint. Once the story begins, it picks you up and carries you away!
